cohen, the big boy: part one (the day of his birth)

9:37 PM

his real birthday was friday, even though he couldn't quite grasp this, as he had already had his birthday party at his dad's the weekend before.

"mommy, i'm 4 now so i can stay up later and watch a movie."

"no, baby, you'll be 4 on friday, you're still 3."

"no, mommy, i already had my captain america party and so i'm 4 and i don't have to go to bed."

"no baby, you're still 3. you'll be 4 on friday. and you'll still be going to bed at your regularly scheduled bedtime."

"but what about when i turn 6 and i'm all growed up?"

"what happened to 5? we'll have to talk about it then. it's "grown."  "grown up."

"yeah, growned up. ok, let's talk about this party we're having on sunday."

yes, let's. but first, let me show you the actual birthday morning. i woke up early and made him chocolate chip muffins and had one present ready for him to open before he started his first day as a growned up 4 year old:

let me just start by saying

a) my son is darn cute.

b) notice he is smiling like a normal person with two visible eyes and not like this strange child who insisted on giving the camera this weird (but extremely adorable) face
(which i miss) every time it flashed:

this new smile happened the day he turned 4. part of being growned up, i tell you.
c) notice how tall and thin he's growing. out of the "toddler" stage and into the "boy" stage (although he'll forever be my "baby")
4) oh wait, we were doing letters... d) yes, he did just dismount the balance beam, and he does this in his underwear.

ok. i'm lying.

he gave me the obligatory smile because i had the camera in his face, but all the while i knew what he was thinking: "is this it? where are the other presents i saw wrapped hiding in your room?"

he humored me.

(i love him. don't you love him?)

this look accompanies his new phrase: "really?" which can be translated into slight disappointment. . .  "another movie?"

but he liked it, nonetheless.

"ok mommy, opened that one. where are the other ones i saw hiding in your closet?"
ha! knew it.

they watched the movie while they enjoyed cohen's muffins. chocolate chips may have to become his new birthday breakfast tradition. last year, it was chocolate chip pancakes (the size of his torso, which he completely finished. even licked his plate. . .  because he was 3 and it was his birthday, i allowed the public licking.) this year, i had to work and was bummed i couldn't spend the day with him, so i had to settle for the muffins. they enjoyed it. especially that random little strawberry blonde child i birthed.

where did she come from?

and yes, that pillow between them is totally a buffer so she doesn't try to steal
even more muffins.

the actual birthday party post is coming up, so check back soon!!
